Changes to Winter Lunches 2018-2019

The Winter Lunches will continue this year with a slightly different format.  As some restaurants are now making a 10% (or more) service charge for groups of more than 10 people, I propose that we should each book a table for our own group.  This will mean no need for pre-ordering.

Each month the venue and date will be posted on our website.

The Christmas Lunch, on 11th December, still needs to be booked by me, so please let me Rita Wye have  your names if you wish to attend.

Next  lunch :  TBA.

Presidents Day - Saturday - 21st July 2018  ( Report & Pictures)

Dave Rowan
Waterside Bowls
President 2018

Dot Haines
Waterside Bowls
Vice-President 2018

What a super day, about 60 members turned out for the annual Presidents charity and fun day. The weather was set fair after an initial scare early in the morning with a small rain shower, but all brightened up and sunshine was the order of the day.

Firstly - Huge thanks must go to my wife (Maureen Rowan) and her willing band of helpers: Val Benham, Barbara Clarke and Jacki Tritten who did the day proud with a super lunch with cake to follow. There was even free ice creams after the first two games. They worked really hard so that members had a great day and for that I thank. Not forgetting our barman Mike Crouch who always steps to the mark when needed - Thank-you Mike. Also thanks to all members who helped tidy up at the end of the day. It was much appreciated.

Thanks must also go to  Lesley Mitchell for the spider, Roger Mitchell for scoring, in effect giving me an easy ride. Jean Blake and Jean Renyard for managing the draw and Jean Nichollls for Rink Management across the three games, Sue & John Lewis-Parkes for rink set-up.  Also massive thank-you to all members who contributed a draw prize, everyone commented on what a super draw it was and members responded by the number of tickets sold.

The days games consisted of three games of ten ends with members selecting their Rink and position by drawing from Rink Bag. Engraved medals were presented to the three top scorers who were : Dave Baker, John Gilbert and Eric Donaldson. A recent tradition started by Roger Mitchell of presenting a runners up medal to the player who got the least support from his team-mates  across all three games was continued, with a runners-up medal presented to Ian Vincent.

Highlight of the day was the hoisting of the New Waterside Bowls Club Flag (See Picture).  It has been the ambition of the management committee since the closure of the W.S.S.C (2016) that we have a new flag to signal our rebirth and independence as a new bowls Club.

The new Flag was generously donated by Jean Nicholls and will serve as beacon of our independence of our club for many years to come. I would like to mention Dave  & Jean Renyard who through the Garden Party fund raising had  initially raised money for a new flag but all this money was lost through the closure of the W.S.S.C.

It shows the commitment and generosity of members that Jean Nicholls stepped up and generously donated the New Flag - Thank-you Jean.

Finally I would thank all members who attended and contributed to a really great day and who continue to make my Presidential year an ongoing pleasure.

As you now my charity this year is the Waterside Food bank which helps all local people, young, old in financial difficulties across the local area. All monies raised during my Presidents year (including the money allocated to me for presidents day) will go to the charity.

Should you feel that you would like to make a donation to this worthy cause please just pass to myself or any committee member with your wishes.

The collection box on the bar is there for any small change you may wish to donate after buying your president a large gin.

Once again thank-you to all members.
