Waterside Bowls Club - 75th Anniversary
During the summer the members celebrated the
Club’s 75th Anniversary with some special events. Late May, we held an
Anniversary party for members, their friends and families and for prior
members. Special guests attending included three local councillors, the longest
serving lady member Min Topp, and Tony Pothecary, a life member. Min dressed up
in traditional ladies bowling uniform. Margaret Vaughan joined us and provided
photographs going back to the 1950’s when her uncle Harry Nowell was bowling as
one of the founder members.
The day was introduced by President Andy and
Chairman Janet. A special event cake, made and decorated by Helen, was cut by
Min and Janet. Andy was able to share a 75th Anniversary congratulations
pennant with all present which had been donated by the Hampshire Past
Presidents Association during a friendly match with us a week earlier.
After everyone had enjoyed tea and cake, the
bowlers were able to play two fun games of bowls with drawn rinks and
non-bowlers were able to join in quizzes and have a go at target bowls and
other games.
Later, in June and July, we
held two special anniversary invitation friendly matches against teams from New
Forest Associations clubs and then from Southampton and District Associations
clubs. These were a great success as they gave all club members who wished an
opportunity to play in competitive but friendly games and also opportunities to
meet members from other clubs. Proceeds from these two matches went to the
President’s Charity Fund.
